Characteristics of highway tunnels
Author:
Large Cross-section
Compared to railway tunnels or mine tunnels, highway tunnels have significantly larger cross-sectional areas. For example, a two-lane tunnel has a net cross-sectional area of approximately 62m², a three-lane tunnel approximately 96m², and a four-lane tunnel can reach 136m². The large cross-section leads to an expanded range of surrounding rock disturbance, adding tensile and plastic zones, increasing construction difficulty and support requirements.
Flat Shape
To conform to the building clearance (a truncated rectangle with width greater than height), highway tunnels are often designed as flat horseshoe shapes. This shape easily forms tensile zones at the crown, leading to increased bending moments in the lining structure, making the top prone to collapse or concrete cracking.
Complex Surrounding Rock Conditions
Affected by geological tectonic movements, the surrounding rock that the tunnel passes through may contain complex conditions such as joints, faults, caves, and high ground stress, and groundwater or human activities (such as goafs) further increase uncertainty.
Uncertain Structural Stress
The surrounding rock stress distribution is affected by factors such as lithology, excavation methods, and support time, making it difficult to accurately predict the stress on the lining structure, requiring reliance on engineering analogies and dynamic design.
High Waterproofing Requirements
Seepage will cause slippery roads, icing (in cold regions), or damage to electromechanical equipment, so strict waterproof design is required to ensure driving safety.
Ventilation and Lighting Required for Operation
Lighting: Alleviates driver's "bright-dark-bright" visual adaptation stress, eliminates black hole effect and glare.
Ventilation: Long tunnels require mechanical ventilation to dilute vehicle exhaust gases, and in the event of a fire, it is also necessary to control the spread of smoke.
Construction and Concealed Engineering Challenges
Poor construction environment (confined space, high noise, poor air quality) affects worker efficiency and safety.
Many concealed projects (such as lining, waterproof layer), leakage detection problems are difficult to trace.
